Confused – you will be
We all know how confused nature is becoming at the changing seasons, and 2011 is a classic. This time last year we were plunged into sub zero temperatures and snow for most of December, even in the far south west of Cornwall. This year has been unusually mild so far, and a quick walk round the garden shows the following plants – still in flower.
- Climbing Roses
- Hardy Geraniums
- Surfinia Petunias
- Climbing Geraniums
- Bedding Geraniums
- Bedding Lobelia
- Tomato plants
However there’s still not much sign of the bulbs coming up, other than a few crocus’s. In the vegetable plot the leeks have started to go to seed, and I’ve still got lettuce left over, thats starting to seed as well !
Even though the ground has been very wet, I had the urge to go tidy up the veg plots, and get rid of some the weeds that are growing like wildfire at the moment. I had an unexpected bonus on Xmas eve, when I dug into the ground to uproot a particularly pernicious weed when out came a huge new potato .. from a plot I thought I’d cleared back in September. It was perfect, and on the table in 2 hours J
With any luck this year we won’t loose the climbing geraniums and tender perennials, as we have the last 2 years in a row. So here’s looking forward to a good 2012 in the garden !
